LA WRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Tow A Council was held on Monday evening. Present : The Mayor,-Crs. Coverlid, Hayes, Hill, Hay, and Walker. . The minutes of the previous, meet-, ing were read and confirmed. The correspondence was dealt with aa follows : — Letter from Mr. Suttou relative to contemplated works in Irving-street. Eight; applications for the situation of surfaceman was received." A ballot was tf.keu, which resulted in two votes being recorded for Detert, two for Buckley, and one for Driscoll. and advertise them for sile by public auction immediately". Tenders were received' as under :— - For culvert in Lismorejstreet : Stirling audTuekey, £29 Bs.'; D. Whittet, £13 Gd. 6d. For fencing waterworks reserve: Vye and Co.j £1 Us. per chain ; M. Byan, £l 9s' 9d. per chain. For works in Harrington-street : Anderson aud Brunton, .£29 145.; M. Evan, £39 19s. For construction of footpath' in Irvine-street : Anderson and Brunton, £l Is. per chain; Vye and Co., £1 10s. per chain; J. Downey, 12s. 6d. per chain ; M. Ryan. 10a. per chain. The lowest tender in each case waf» accepted. Cr. Hay inquired if any deposit was required with a tender,'_and if not, what penalty was imposed upon an individual whose tender was accepted refusing to take up his contract. It appeared that ho security had been exacted from tenderers, and it was resolved that, for the future parties whose tenders were accepted failing to take up their contracts should be disqualified from obtaining corporation work for twelve months. Accounts as follows were referred to the -Finance Committee :— H. "W. Coverlid, attending at; "court -in the case" of M'Coy v. Corporation', £2 25. ; James Hill, attending court during the same case, £2 2s. ; A. Armstrong, rent. £6 ; E. Andrews, ss. ; Eobinson, £2 Bs. Accounts referred to Finance and Governor's Reception Committees : G. Fowler, engrossing address to His Excellency. £1 Is. ; A. Armstrong, refreshments to Governor, suite, and Town Council, £5 55. ; Kelso, horse ;ind buggy hire, £7 ; Searlo and Davison, buggy hire, £4. Accounts referred to Finance and Public Works Committees : Robinson, £1 Is. ; Eobinson, 12s. ; subsidy to swimming bath*, £5. The account presented by tliß Athenaaum Committee, £2 25., was ordered to lie on ihe table. The Finance Committee's report, stating that payments to the amount of £52 17s. Gel", had been made, was received and adopted. C;\ Hay gave notice that he would at next meeting move : " That tenders be called for the formation, pitching, and metalling of the "Beaumont road." Cr. Hill drew" attention to certain dangerous holes, in Peel-street. The Public Works Committee was directed' to look after the matter.' The Public Work 3 Committee were instructed to bring up at next meeting a report upon works proposed to be undertaken in Lancaster-street. The Town Clerk stated that the amount of rates collected during the present year was £6. He was instructed to get the rates in as quickly as possible. The Council then adjourned.
