WETHER STONES SCHOOL.
The annual fete and distribution of prizes in connection with the above school took place on Monday afternoon, in the schoolroom. Upwards of 100 children<were present, and were supplied to their hearts' content with all kinds of pastry and confectionery, and an unlimited quantity of tea. About five o'clock the tables were cleared away, and the priz3S distributed by the Rev. Mr. Menzies. Every scholar was presented with a book. Mr. Menzies save a very appropriate address, and in handing the prizes to the scholars, spoke a word of encouragement to each of them. The list of prize-takers appeared in a former issue. Before dispersing, three cheers were given by the scholars for Mr. Johnson, the teacher, and three cheers for Mr. Menzies. There was a very good attendance of parents and those friendly to the cause of education in the neighborhood. In the evening the annual statutory meeting was held. Mr. Hart occupied the chair. The Secretary read the annual report, as follows :—: — Gentlemen, — In accordance with the usual custom, we now submit to you our report for the past year. In doing so, your Committee desire to congratulate the inhabitants on the favorable results that have attended our efforts. In submitting our report, onr primary duty is to lay before you such information as will enable you to judge how far successful the efforts of your Committee have been. We can assure you that it was very gratifying to us and creditable to the teachers, seeing 'he satisfactory manner in which the children of this school acquitted themselves, both at the Government Inspector's and committee's annual examination*, shewing tha*the teachers have fulfilled their offices of -fcrosfc zealously a-ncl successfully- lio-fcK teachers and pupils were complimented on the progress made during the year, and the order maintained in the school. The total number who attended school during the year was 81, and the average attendance for last quarter was 53. It was sugges ed in our predecessor's report, that the flooring of the schoolroom and the fencing in of the ground belonging to the school be proceeded with as soon as possible. This we have been unable to do, owing to insufficiency of funds, as we considered it our first duty to pay off the debt remaining due at the end of last year.- We would also suggest to our successors the advisability of adding more books to the library when they hove funds available. We now desire to record our sincere thanks to those ladies and gentlemen who have so kindly assisted at our course of readings and at tne children's feast, and to Mr. Kofoed for his kind presentation of a number of school books. Also to J. C. Brown, Esq., M.H.tt., for the deep interest he has always taken in all matters connected with the school and library. In conclusion, your Committee now resign their office with full assurance that you will elect as our successors gentlemen that will have the interest of this school at heart. — Signed on behalf of the Committee. Wat. Cvrr, Secretary. The receipts showed a total of L3ll Bs, and the expenditure a total of L 320 16s. 4d. School fees for the year amounted to LSI 10s., and the returns from the readings, L 54 16s. 63. The following gentlemen were elected members of committee for the present year: — Messrs. Cut, Hart, Abrim, Donnelly, Sutherland, Mooney, Millard, Murray, M. Coxon.
