LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Towu Council was held on Monday evening. Present: The Mayor. Crs. Hill, Hay, Hayes, Walker, and Coverlid. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. / The correspondence consisted of a letter from Mr. Millar, F.S.A>, asking for an impression of the corporation seal, to complete a collection of municipal seals he intended to forward to the Vienna Exhibition. Mr. Millar's request was granted. The followins: accounts were referred to the Finance Committee: — "Tuapeka Times," £7 6s. 6d. ; L. C. Holmes, £15 ; G-. Buriws, £8 15s. The report of the Public Works Committee was read, as follows — Lawrence, 6th January, 1873. The Lawrence Town Council. Gentlemen, — Your Public "Works Committee having had various matters submitted for their consideration, have to report as follows :—: — 1. That in accordance with . authority passed at the last meeting of the Council, the channel near the Bank of New South "Wales has been raised, and will shortly be completed. > 2. The Committee would recommend the Council to take measures to engage a practical man to take charge of the main road and other Corporation work, and to be constantly employed thereon in repairing and maintaining the surface, cleaning channels, water, reservoirs, races, and watering J;he streets when required. 3. That the Phoenix "Water Co. be again requested to send down a continuous but small current of water to supply the dams, instead of rushing it down at long intervals. 4. That this Council is stiongly recommended to fence in ihe two reservoirs, and plant the fence and inside margin with trees, for the purpose of shelter. 5 That the Town Clerk notify to Mr. Farrer the regret of the Council in re the subject ma-ter of Mr. Farrer's letter of da c 20th JSVr. 6. The Committee are preparing specifications of works proposed to be done in Harrington, Irvine, and Lismore Streets, and recommend that be called for the TVOik. Edward Hekbert, Mayor. The report was adopted, and it was decided to advertise-for a man, and for tenders for works in Harrington-strret. The report of the Eeserves Committee rficommended that the market reserve should not at present be dealt with. It was received. Cr. Hay moved that the Town Clerk bring up, at next meeting, a list of .nil reserves not yet disposed of, for the purpose of being then dealt wi<"h. The motion was seconded by Cr. Hill, and agreed to. His Worship stated that the Provincial Executive had now granted the corporation the use of prison- labor, on the condition that it should not be used except in the vicinity of the Camp reserve. Cr. Hill, in moving the motion notice of which he had given at the. previous meeting, viz.. tbat the Town , Cleric receive 10 per rent, on the amount of licenses, fees,&c, received by the Corporation;, stated that when he • gave the notice he was laboring under - ».«^i-Tprehension. With the permission of the Council, he would substitute 5 per cent, for 10 per cent. •» Permission to alter tbe motion as proposed was given. Cr. Hayes seconded the motion as amended, and it .was carried unanimously. On the motion of Cr. Hayes, seconded by Cr. Coverlid, Crs. Hay, Hill and Coverlid, were appointed Licensing Committee.* The^Town Clerk was directed to communicate with the General Government relative to ihe opening of Catnpbellton-street through the Camp .Reserve to Peel-street. The Council then adjourned.
