THE VOLUNTEERS.

The first of two competitions for 'the selection of representatives for No. 1 Company, Oamaru Rangers, in the approaching competition for Provincial representatives in the Colonial firing, took place on December 14. The Times says :— < >nly ten competitors came to the firing point, in consequence of many who would otherwise have stood a very good chance, being unable, in the event of their being finally successful, to make the journey to iNekon, as that would involve absence from their business for nearly a fortnight. This leads to the remark that if the authorities really wish the shooting power of the force properly tested, it would be far better to let the firing take place at the head-quarters of each Province, sending an officer round to see the arrangements properly carried out. The following are the scores of those who made 45 and upwards. Kanges, 200 yds ; Hytbe position ; 300 yds, any position ; class targets :—: — J 200 300 T , yds. yds. XL Pvt. It L.
