Mr James Logan's application to take up 10,000 acres of run 175 A, Greenvale, Tapanui, under clause 83 of the Waste Land Act, 1866,1 was received ; survey to be paid in land per clause 41, the 2000 acres of agricultural land, alluded to in Mr M'Kerrow's letter of July 24, being excluded.
Mr M'Kerrow's memorandum referred to was as follows :—" The land applied for by Mr Logan c naists principally of a massive mountain, whose summit is 1700 feet above sea level. From this elevabion steep spurs and gullies run down on the north, east, and west sides of the gorges of the Leithenburn and the Pomahaka River, and to the head waters of the last branch of the Waikaka. Towards the south, the spurs emerge in'o easy slopes, and flat country near the district boundary line, at an elevation of 600 to 1000 feet. To the north of the district boundary line, there will be about 10,000 acres, which may be classed as consisting of 3000 acres inferior pastoral country, 5000 average do, and about 2000 acres of semipastoral and agricultural. Between the district boundary line and south boundary of application, there will be over 2000 ac es of flat undulating ridges, of a mean elevation of 700 feet. This area may be classed as agricultural land." Mr J. A. Connell the District Surveyor reported on the same date as Mr M'Kerrow, as follows :—": — " About half of the land marked off as agricultural is really good, the remainder being secondclass. I may state that this portion of agricultural land lies at the outside boundary of an enormous area of first-class land fitted for agricultural settlement, extending southwards to the present hundreds, westward to the Mataura River, and eastward to the Pomahaka. Uuder these circumstances Ido not think that the alienature of the land include 1 , in the application "woula in any way interfere with the wants of a bona fide settlement."
Mr Adams, for Mr John M'Kellar, applied to have the boundary between runs 103 aud 178 adjusted. The Beard declined to inter* fere. Mr M 'Kellar's application for compensation for house erected by him on section ;4, block 15, Glenkenich, sold to one Kobert Elliott, was referred to the Government.
