OUR TOWN COUNCIL.
" '"' (Tothe'EJitor.) Sin, —^The gentlemen who now occupy the seat,s at the Council Board obtained their position by their promises to carry but certain public works iv the town.. Sir, I would ask you, what are these gentlemen doing 1 Nearly onothird of the" year has expired, and they may be said to .have done nothing.- If an application' is made to' them, it is referi-ed to one committee or another for it to report upon, and, as' a rule, there the mutter rests. The new members of the Council were all in ' favor of making footpaths on the Beaumont and Wetherstones roads. Now -nothing is heard of tins, and the proper time for road making will mosb likely pass away before the Council awakes to its duty. At present, I believe, there is plenty money for all purposes in the Corporation coffers, and yet these wiseacres who have the expending of- it appear to take a delight in holding it. '' So great appears to be the delight of some of them, especially- the Mayor, to hold possession of the bawbees that the small- sunv.whic,h;had been allocated these hist two years towards a prize for the Lawrence scholars has 'been struck off the list of expenditure this year. And why] They 1 "take a liigh stand, calling it, a matter of principle ! . and say. they, have no. right, to expend the ratepayers' money , in, that manner. I say bah ,to* all such hypocrisy, and : especially, to such maudlin sentimentality'as that. If it is right to expend money on "streets for the benefit of rate payers, surely no expenditure can be more laudable than that of a few pounds on. the ratepayers' children to incite tlierh to study and emulation. Seeing the revenuo ot' the. -Corporation, ■wilb'be considerably* augmented ihis year, I . think, instead of the Council offering a small priz a , they, would be quite justified in offering a soholarship in the Uni versifcy to any youth attending the Lawrence Gramrner School who-proved 'himself sufficiently advanced to enter that institution. — I am, «fee, Anti-Misery.
