THE INTERCOLONIAL BOATRACE.

The Balmain regatta took place, on Nov. 9. The principal event, and the one in which most interest was displayed, was the Intercoloninl Gig-race, for which three crews only started. The weather was splendid, with a light north-east wind and smooth water. The flagship and every point on Balmain and Sydney was crowded. The start was made at 10 mm. 45 sec. past 12, Melbourne slightly leading, the liiver crew all behind. t'efore leaving Pyrmont the Sydney orew gradually drew up, and at Balmain had a length's clear lead. The River crew also improved their .position from this point. Off Goat Island the Melbourne men fell into the third place ; and in the pull to the Vcrnon, the only change which took place was that a greater interval was placed between the boats, the Sydney champion crew taking a splendid lead from the start. The Melbourne men pulled at the rate of 37 strokes a minute, the others slightly lower. The finishing point was passed by Sydney at 38 mm. 30 sec past 12, the River crew being a mile ast m, and the Melbourne crew half a mile behind them. Each was lustily cheered.
