ROXBURGH.
(From our own Correspondent.)
The principal event of interest which has occurred lately, has been the discovery of a what not enly appears but has been proved to be. a large quartz reef, prospected by Mr. Heron, who has spent years in "that pursuit, and .who has been at a tremendou3 expense .in so doing. The development of this rest* onqlit to be aided by tlie surrounding districts, as it will benefit almost everyone, more especially the storekeepers. I myself was out to see the reef last week, and was greatly pleased with its appearance: I also saw the stuff whii?h was. sent. to the Government crushiii'cfJmachiK' 1 ,. which resulterl in a very, satisfactory return of 15dwts to the ton. I'must say that the stone sent to the 1 Government, machine was not picked stone. Some 'picked ' stone when crush.yd ; here without undergoing the operation of quicksilver, averaged 0 ols. to the ton. There 'is to be a meeting held on Saturday -next, at- theTeviot", ior the purpose of forming, a company to work the. r reef. . . Everyfacility for .working it -is on the spot, and nothing is required but machinery. 1 think if the people of 'the district do not show up this 'time and make a good move in the matter, that they ought to be excommunicated altogether. The development ; of this,. reef- may be the making of the" district, as I have, no doubt - that there are plenty • payable reefs about here. !~! ~ All the miners are still, idfe. through tbe -height- of tbe river.' bxxiJL hear tlieyare pjettinjj good gold pafi at the Whitepomb. ,
I think the next point I mi^ht allude to, as it -is now I think goiiiij ahead in' most of the sufrouiidintr districts, is the formation of a Cricket ClalS. 'There Ihai been. hn&~ qt two gentlemen here endeavoring to raise a elub^butirl vain. The gentlemen inhabifcafiff. heir,. .seem, to he thorough iiater^f-tije-^mo.: . If they do not get -them up * . soon, we shall" be too late.
I noticed in a "late issue of the " Times," that Mr. M. Hay has been appointed collector for the Tuapeka Hospital. I also noticed that Mesdnmea Cook and Dewes, have been appointed collectors) for the same institution in the '"Wai tali una distinct. I don't know, whether under thc"cifejumst'ances, Mr. Hay will consider it 'his duty to visic this district for the purpose of soliciting- subscriptions'; but if he should contemplate doing so, I would in the interest of the institution he represents, advise him not to conic beyond Mr. Chalmers', until he finds that the ladies before mentioned have neglected to perform the duties undertaken voluntary by them.
At Havelock; -mining: matters ai'e pretty quiet. A few of the claims arc paying pretty fair wages. The shareholders (five in number) in the "Wnipori claim, shared thirty -fivo pounds per man, out of the last paddock, for seven weeks work, after paying about twenty pounds' expenses.
