The leper, who for some time past has been an inmate of the Lawrence lazaretto, is to be liberated to-day. Since his admittance, on August Ist, he has been under the charge of Dr. Stewart, and treated with arsenic inter-, nally and carbolic acid ointment externally. He has also been treated to a liberal diet, as much as 21bs of meat per day, being allowed, besides c quantity of other nutritious articles of European diet. The arsenic treatment was kept up till its toxic influence was manifested, and this state was maintaiued by its use till a cessation of the toxic symptoms took place, and by small doses at. irregular intervals according as the symptoms shewed themselves, This drug was last administered when the' leprous blotches and the other symptoms described in a former issuo, seemed to have entirely disappeared,' leaving only the murks and scars of the original disease behind. The appearance of the patient has almost entirely changed! The peculiar, scaly glazed skin characteristic of the leper has disappeared, and the man is now stout, robust,' and healthy, and largely increased in weight. As a precautionary measure, Dr. Stewart recommends his periodical examination for some time, and possibly, if thought necessary, a mild continuance of the treatment.
We are requested by Mr. Mussen to state that his visit to Lawrence cannot possibly extend beyond the time mentioned in his advertisement. Those, therefore, who wish a really good portrait should lose no time in calling at his photographic studio, Peel-street. A Simon lately permeated the Provincial Press, that one R. E. Field— well known in Tuapeka, intended to institute an action against our K. M., unless he apologised for certain iemarks made by him, in his judicial capacity touching the said Field. We understand (on good authority), that this horrible threat has evaporated, after much " bounce " from Mr: Field and his lawyer. The correspondence shown to us, is as amusing as anything in Pickwick. The Mount Ida "Buzfuz," has certainly got the worst of it, and may well exclaim with Sir And»ew Aguccheek, '"An I had known he had been so cunning of fence, I would have seen him damned, ere I had fought witli him."
Mr. John Ah Tong of Wellington. Mr. Brogden's agent, arrived in Tuapeka on Saturday night. His mission is to procure Chinese labor for the construction of the Clutha railway. He offers 6s 6d per day, for Chinese laborers, and 8s per day for skilled workmen. He has up to the present time been pretty successful, having obtained about 200 Celestials. 1h« number required by Mr. Brogden is about 500.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court, Lawrence, on Thursday last, Julia Driscoll a girl of 11 years of age, was committed for trial upon three charges of obtaining goods under false pretences. On Friday, Timothy Driscoll, and Catherine Driscoll, parents of the girl, were brought up charged with receiving the goods, knowing them to have been fraudulently obtained, and discharged ; the evidence adduced] not tending in the least degree to support the charge.
Captain Baldwin, the travelling sub-commis-sioner of the.Government Life Assurance and Annuities, will. visit Switzers before his departure from the province, and will fully explain the causes which prevented his being there before the eleventh hour.
Monday last, the day appointed for all loyal subjects to celebrate the advent of the Prince of Wales to this sphere, was observed as a close holiday in Lawrence. The Government offices, banks, and business establishments were closed, and the citizeus went in for enjoyment such as could be obtained from trips to the surrounding localities. The weather was exceedingly hot, but the indomitable Anglo-Saxon energy prevalent} about this locality overcame that obstacle, and pleasure was extracted from every available source.,. We think His Royal .Highness ought to feel highly gratified at the manner in which the Tuapeka folks obseived the anniversary of his natal day. '
A Boxbobqh correspondent writes as follows : — In a solitary undisturbed locality whose striking events are rare, people frequently enjoy practical jokes, even when carried so far as to prove seriously detrimental to the complexion of the unfortunate beiugs who are operated upon. The . truth of this was fully borne out here lately, and on the person of a member ■of the House of Representatives, whose face strongly, indicated a pretty close connection with the dupes of the , celebrated Madam Rachel. The member arrived here from -Lawrence, and was duly received by a few friends, who accinpanied him to a "pub" where he was to receive a congratulatory address for the services which he had rendered to the people of Roxburgh as a member. On entering the house, drinks for all hands were ordered. A little warm discussion now and then cropped up. but the consumption of fluids was the principal business transacted. Cakes were also required ; but although the fluid was always at hand, ■ the solid dainty was not immediately forthcoming, and was at lust fairly forgotten iv the excitement produced by the yellings and howlings of disapprobation which were everywhere levelled at the member, who gradually, under the influence of the Bth tumbler of P.B-, abandoned the perpendicular and, with a smile which can only be acquired by long piactic&at Bellamy's, assumed a horizontal position, and "'dreamt he dwelt in marble halls" audibly, through* his nose. A worthy local artist thereuyou 'faithfully exveuted the emblems of friendship, love,' and truth on the prostrate but noble head of our hero with " Judsou's simple dye for the people. " It is worthy of mention, as tending to correct the erroneous prevalent idea that M.H.R.s are never, or very seldom, played with in this way, that the " party " took the dye like an old stocking. The pigment applied did its work well, as tho " pmty'a" head is all but denuded of the crowning glory of -which he was once so proud. Ayer's hair vigour was applied to counteract the effect of the dye, but it was of no avail. The " party " is, however, I am glad to say, now rapidly recovering, under the careful attention of our celebrated female accoucheur.

A meeting, to consider the question of dummy applications for agricultural land, and the extension of the connnonagH, was held at the Tuapeka Hotel, Tunpeka Flat, on Saturday evening. About an hour after the time appointed for the proceedings to commence, Mr. David Evans was appointed chairman, and it was -decided in consequence of the limited attendance, to adjourn till the following Saturday night, to the Commercial- Hotel, Lawrence.
