THE CANTERBURY RACES.
Christchuhch, November 8. The races to-day were again very well attended, and the weather was splendid. The following were the several events :—: — Huklle Race, 50 soys., two miles; over
eight flights of hurdles. Mr R. Fraser's Medora 1 Mr H. Oraui's Bismarck ... 2 Medora ran right away from Bismarck, winning by a distance. On coming to the scale, however, Medora's jockey, M'Kay, of Dunedin, was 3lbs short weight. He said be had dropped some lead. It being supposed that some unfairness had taken place, the Stewards held a meeting, at which cvi dence was taken, and after long consideration decided to declare the race null and void, and to disqualify M'Kay from riding on a Canterbury course again. This decision gave universal satisfaction.
Derby Stakes, 150 soys, 1£ mile. Mr Nosworthy's Calumny, Bst 51bs ... 1 Mr Nos worthy's Lurline, B<t slbs ... 2 Mr Lunn's Kate Kearney, Sst 5ll»s ... 3 Mr Campbell's Dunbroon, Mr Douglas's Dragoon, and Mr Redwood's Awatea, also ran. Mr Douglas's Adonis, Mr Cntt's Kenga, and Mr Griffitbs's Mrs Stowe, were scratched. Awatea was a hot favorite at the stait.
Lurline and Calumny cut out the running. and came away from the rest. A capital race for home then ensued between the pair, and was won by Calumny by a head. Time — 2 mm. 40 sec. Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, 200
soys., and an added sweepstakes of 10 soys. ; 2 miles. Mr Brabazon's Detractor, 7st 71hs ... 1 Mr Nosworthy's Malice, 7st 121bs ... 2 Mr Nosworthy's No 7st 21bs ... 3 Ma Campbell's Tambourine, Bst slbs ... — Mr Marton's Barbarian, 6st 21bs ... —
Yatterina was scratched. The betting was as follows :—3: — 3 to 2 against Detractor ; 2 to 1 against Tambourine ; 4 and 5 to 1 against Malic j ; 3 to 1 against Barbarian ; 5 to 1 against No Name. j After one or two false starts, ©wing to Barbarian refusing to leave the post, the lot got away to a capital start. Malice took the lead at a not pace, and was closely fol- 1 lowed by Detractor and Tambourine in the ; order named. After passing the stand the j first time, Malice increased her lead to about i 100 yards, the rest being in a cluster. In this order they raced until reaching the top turn, when Malice had evidently had enough of it. and Detractor came to the front. A capital race then ensued between him and Malice for the first place, Detractor ultimately winning by a length. Time, 2min. 42Asec. Criterion Stake 1 , 50 soys. ; lj{ mile. Mr Walter's Slander, 9st 61b 1 Mr Griffiths's Defamation, flst 21b .. 2j Only two started, Envy, Hatred, Malvina, and Awatea being scratched Defamation started a hot favorite, but Slander won, after a good race, by two lengths. Time 2min. 2Gsec. Mr Griffiths entered a protest against Slander for not having a 31b. penalty for winning over LIOO in 1871 &ud 1872. The protest is to be decided at noon to-morrow. Gkand Stand Handicap, 100 soys., 1 mile. Harlequin, 6st lOlbs 1 Slander. 9st lOlbs 2 7st 12lbs 3 Defamation, Envy, Malvina, and Adonis also ran. A good start was effected, Harlequin and Slander cutting out the running at a hot pace. The pace throughout was terrific. Coming down the straight, all were plying the whalebone, and a fine race ensued between Harlequin and Slander all the way down to home. By dint of good riding, Harlequin's jockey succeeded in getting him in a head before Slander, amid loud cheers from the spectators. # Time, Imin. 475 sec. Near the quarter-mile 'post a mixed up jostle occurred, aud the owner of Slander protested against Harlequin taking the stakes on account of a cross alleged to have been made by Harlequin's rider. The Stewards, after hearing the evidence, dismissed the protest, and awarded the stakes to Harlequin. A race between the sailors of H.M.S. Dido was got up at the conclusion of the last event, and created great fun. The Jockey Club have been thanked by memorial for disqualifying Peeress. Auckland, November 9. The Nebraska sails South to-night. Monday is a public holiday, and the foundation of the market place will be laid. The Clio will fire a salute in honor of the day. Mr Freer, M.P.C, is dead. Wellikgton, November 9. The burning of the Wanganui bridges has no political importance as affecting the relations between the Europeans and Maoris. The prime mover is Hore Temanu, of Kai Iwi. He reported himself to the Resident Magistrate at Wauganui. It is believed that the natives have been more or less encouraged in the act by some settlers. The native is I to be proceeded against under the " Malicious In jury to Property Act." A Perfect Cure. — A young wife cured her husband of a disposition to absent himSflf from home at night by providing him with an excellent dinucr, and saying to him afterwards : " George, if you fiud a sweeter spot than our home, describe it to me, and I will rival it if I die in the attempt." A kiss and » few tears completed the victory.
