TUAPEKA HOSPITAL
The usual monthly meeting of the Tnapeka Hospital Committee was held on Tuesday night. Present : the President, Messrs. Mears, Ferguson, Arthur, Uren, Harrop (Treasurer), and Hayes (Secretary). "~"
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. *
The Surgeon's report showed that 11 patients had been admitted during the month — 8 of the number being paying patients. Mr. Harrop, on behalf of the Sub-Com-mittee appointed to inquire into the Chinese subscriptions, reported 4hat Chin Ah Sum had stated he had paid all the money subscribed, with the exception of four or five pounds which he cpuld not get, as the parties who had promised it had gbne away. Mr. 3lears moved, "That, in the opinion of this Committee,- the money contributed by the Chinese residents in this district is inadequate to the amount of relief afforded to them ; and that, unless they in future contribute a fair amount in proportion to their numbers, they be only .admitted to the institution as paying patients, and thai the Chinese be informed of this resolution." The motion was' seconded by Mr. Ferguson, and carried. "Mr. Mears moved that a paid collector be appointed, and that an advertisement be inserted in the " Tuapeka Times" calling for -applications. lie instanced . the case .of other • hospitals where the employment of paid collectors had proved highly successful. - Mr. Ferguson seconded » the motion. He did not think, however, it would" be advisable to' do away with the present system of members of the committee canvassing for subscriptions. The collector could afterwards collect the money aud receive his percentage upon tho whole amount obtained. The motion was put and carried. • It was resolved to request Mesdames C<>ok and Davis to act as a local committee at Waitahuoa ; the President nnd Mr. Mtears were appointed to- cvnvass Lawrence ; and Messrs Uren and Ferguson were appointed to canvass the diafcri&t ; generally. • ; It was resolved to get up entertainments at Blue Spur, liiwrence, and Wetherstones in aid of the fuiids, and the President and Messrs. Mears and Ferguson were appointed a stib-com mi ttee to make the n^essary ariMng-ements. Mi*. Mears drew attention to the sorrel which had over-run a large portion of Ihe Hospital grounds.
It was resolved to have the sorrel cut down, and the ground referred to ploughed up, and planted in potatoes, and that tenders bo called for the work at once.
Mr Mears drew attention to the number of attendants, at the Hospital, which he considered was in excess of the number required. A married couple he considered ample and sufficient for the requirements of the Hospital. He did not intend to move any resolution, bnt merely brought the matter before v the committee.
The" Visiting Committee were instructed to take into consideration the advisability of reducing the staff, O to report at next meeting.
Mr. Ferguson was appointed member of the Visiting Committee, vice Mr. Uren. , Tlie meeting then adjourned."
