PORT CHALMERS* Cctober 7.

We have been requested to state that in consequence of tho very rapid run from Liverpool made by the steamship Great Britain, this vessel will leave. Hobson's Bay ou the'^22nd inst., instead of the 26th, as formerly advertised.

The fire on board the Nebraska occurred shortly after her arrival ab Auckland. The steward, who had been smoking, put a lighted pipe amongst the clothes in his bunk, and they ignired. Captain Harding discovered and extinguished the fire without damage. The steamer Star of the South has been put chased by Mr Houghton, of D-inedin, for LG.OOO and is intended for the Southern trade, but will trade between Napier aad A uckland till February next. The schooner Spec, that arrived from Moeraki yesterday, was to-day placed alongside the schooner JSlderslie, and transhipped 478 bajjs of oats to tbe latter vessel. The barque Waratah, from Launceston, was this morning removed from the lower | anchorage to the Chalmers Jetty, where she landed a lot of 38 fine horses, principally draught, which wore taken overlaud to Dunedin. The barque was expected to proceed with this afternoon's flood to discharge cargo. October 8. We understand that the s. s. Star of the South may be expected in this Port in a month or six weeks, but the precise time* cannot be stated, as the matter is at present under arrangement. The barque Helena 603 tons, daptain Snow, with cargo for Melbourne, was this morning- towed to sea by the steam-tug Geelong. : The barque Waratah was last evening towed by the steam-tug Geelong from Port Chahneis to the Rattray street jotty to disI charge the remainder of cargo. I The ship Otago that sailed hence on Sept. 7th arrived at Newcastle on the 22nd. The ship William Wallace that discharged here sailed on Sept. 21st from Newcastle for | Hong Kong. j October 9. The s. s. Rangatira left Auckland en the 30th ultimo at 6 p.m., and arrived at Tauranga at 11 a.m. the following morning ; sailed for Poverty Bay the same day at 2 p ax. , with heavy sea and rain, and arrived there at 4 p.m. on the 2nd inst. ; sailed again I at 5 p.m., with strong h;ad wind aud arrived at Napier at 6.30 a,m. on the 3rd ; ltft same day at 2 p.m., encountered strong head wind and heavy s.-a off Cape Palliser ; arrived in Wellington at 4 p. m. on the 4th ; sailed at S a.m. oh the 6th, with head wind and rain, aud arrived at Lyttelton at noon on the 7th; sailed again at 6 p.m., and arrived at Oamarvi at noon on the Bth ; sailed again at 4 p.m., arriving at Poyfc Chalmers last night and passed up to Dunedin.

The s.s. Pretty Jane arrived last night from the Molyncux, and landed part cargo at Port Chalmers Jetty this morning, and proceeded to Dunedin. The s.s. Maori arrived at 10.45 this forenoon from Lyttelton via intermediate ports, and was placed alongside the barque Albyn's Isle to coal.

The ship Peter Denny, with passengers and a cargo of general merchandise from Glasgow, arrived at the Heads and was signalled at 1 to-day. Following the ship's name, the signal. *' All well on board," was hoisted and the Geelong proceeded to tbe ship at 1.45 to tow her in with this evening's flood. The Peter Denny is said to have sailed en July 9th, and the E. P. Bouverie to have left London on July 11th. The s s. Albion, from Melbourne via West and Northern Ports of call, arrived at 1 p.m. to-day.' The three-masted schooner Eldersiie, for the Mauritius, sailed at 2 p.m. to-day. The s.s, Wallabi was last night placed on Isbister's slip. Owing to a chain breaking in heaving up the Wallabi on the slip, a tide was lost, and she was taken' into the graving dock this afternoon.

October 11.

The screw steamers Pretty, Jane, for the Molyneux, and the Albion, for Melbourne via the Bluff, sailed at 5.15 last evening, the latter arriving at the Bluff at 7.55 this morningThe s.s. Maori, for Lyttelton via intermediate ports sailed last night at 11 p.m. The s.s. Taranaki, that left Ljtteltou at 10.20 to-day, is due to-morrow morning at Port Chalmers.

We are informed of a fatal accident that occurred on board the ship Peter Deuny on the last homeward passage from this port. At about nine o'clock on the evening of the Ist April, John Shaw, of Glasgow, a youth about seventeen years of age, whilst engage*! shifting over the mizen royal halliards to -windward, fell from aloft on to the deck, and, though picked op immediately, was found to be quite dead. Shaw came out in the ship Helensl- c, and was payed off whtn the ship was sold ; he then remained about Port Chalmers for some time, and ultimately joined the Peter Denny to revißit his home.

Co.'s* s.s. Tarauaki, 299 tous, E. Wheeler, airived this morning at 7 o'clock. Left Onelunga on the soh inst ; New Plymouth on the 6th ; Nelson on the 7th ; Picton on the Bfch ; Wellington on the 9th ; Lyttelton en the 11th, at 10 a.m. ; aud arrived as above Experienced strong easterly gales fromOnehunga to Wellington, thence light variable winds and five weather. , The s.s. Storm Bird, from liivercargill, arrived at 1.15 to-day, and passed up to Dunedin.
