WAITAHUNA.

(From our own Correspondent)

Evangelical meetings were held here on the evenings of Monday and Tuesday, 16th and 17th curt. Both were largely attended. The ministers who took part in them were the Revs. Messrs. Arnot, Menzies, Chisholm, and Cameron.

Vincent Pyke, Esq., delivered his lecture, " A Night Among Bead Liona," in the Athenaenin, on Wednesday, the 18lh enrt. There were about seventy persons present. At the conclusion of the lecture a vote of thanks was, on the motion of Mr. G. F. C. Browne, M.P.C., accorded the lecturer. A similar vote to the chairman, Mr. D. G. Poison, for presiding, brought the proceedings to a close. Mr. Hislop, Inspector of Schools, is expected at Waitahuna to-day, Thursday, 26th, to examine the children attending the District School.

Speaking of schools, there is one in course of erection at Havelock. It will be completed in a few weeks, and is to be conducted, I believe, by a young lady late of Clarks Flat.

The Bey. Mr. Arnr>tfc, at the close of the service on Sunday last, intimated that a meeting of the Church Committee was held on the Tuesday previous, and that the contribution 1 * for the quarter to the sustentation fund amounted in something over £SQ ; and farther, that tha district is now a sanctioned charge.

I heard some time a-*o that it was tha intention of Meedaraes Dewes and Cook to try and get up an entertainment for the joint benefit of tho Benevolent Asylum and the Tuapska Hospital. Could not the committee of the latter institution tryjand find two ladies inyour district to represent it, who might meet and confer on the subject with the ladies referred to above, who are Governors of the Benevolent Asylutn? The mining news can he summarised in half-a-dozen words — water for sluicing purposes is abundant.
