WAITAHUNA.

(From our own Correspondent). (Held over last week.) During the past eight or ten days there has been an unusual number of meetings in this place, caused by the circulating of a copy of the New Gold Mining Act, which has been received by Mr. G. F. C. Browne, M.P.C., for the district. After perusing it, this gentleman lost no time in handing it over to the "Waitahuna Miners' Committee, who held a meeting, at which it was resolved to communicate with similar committee's throughout the province, and direct their attention to the Bill. It was also resolved to call a public meeting here to consider the New Act, which meeting was held on the 19th curt., and was largely attended, in fact it was one of the largest ever held in Waitahuna. Messrs G. F. C. Browne, Ferris, Bulfin, Dunn, Winning and others, severely criticised the measure and pulled it to pieces. , Resolutions were passed . and ordered to be forwarded to J. C. Brown, Esq., M.H.R., A meeting to consider the same subject was ,held at Haveleck last night, Aug. 26th, but as you will no doubt receive a report from some , one who was present, I will not further allude to it.

Our spiritual wants are at present well provided for, as we have the benefit of the Rev. Mr. Arnot's ministrations. He has been resident here for* some weeks, and it is to be hoped that the Presbyterians will see their way clear to permanently retaining him in our midst. . We-Jiave a fortnightly visit from the Rev. Mr. Beaumont, and also a monthly visit from the Wesleyan clergyman, whfose name J k,now not. ' Dp; officers pf police, in ' Lawrence,

when Boss Place, or Eeel; street be- ; come a little sloppy, ride on the footpaths in ' drder to' guard ' against the legs of their horses or their own legs; encased in highly polished'-bdbts, being soiled with mud ? I ask the question because when proceeding up Waitahuna Gully a few days ago, I encountered a certain officer, riding on the, footpath which coat some pounds , to construct, and which work was subsidised by the Government to the extent of pound for pound. I suppose if I visited Lawrence, and did the same thing, I would no doubt be ppunced by the gentleman referred to, and .introduced to his worship. I hope these few remarks will be brought under his notice by some kind friend, and that when he again visits "Waitahuna, he will recollect that there are such mdi viduals knocking about as newspaper correspondents.
