CORRESPONDENCE. TESTIMONIAL TO MR. BASTINGS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, — I was tnuu'u disgusted after reading your report or the proceedings of the Lawrence Town Council at the the position taken up by the Mayor in reference to Cr. Walker's motion, voting £10 to the testimonial fund. Our new Mayor seems to be overburdened with conscientious scruples and legal notions, and he has taken this opportunity of endeavouring to force the councillors to swallow them. Tf the proposition to vote this money was illegal, the Mayor should not have allowed it to be put to the vote ; but after putting it, and itß being carried, he has no right now to thwart the decision come to by the Council, which, by his refusal to sign the cheque, he is attempting to do. I am glad to hear that the whole of the councillors with, one exception, have agreed to show their sense of his conduct by refusing to attend any more meetings of Council, until he complies with the motion. [ should like to see those councillors call a meeting of the ratepayers to allow them to express their opinion upon the action taken by the Mayor, and for them to decide if it is their wish that the gentleman whe has occupied the position of Mayor for the last six years, is not entitled to some acknowledgement from the residents of this town. Trusting this matter will not stop here, I am, &c., Ratepayer. Lawrence, August 28th.
