RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. LAWRENCE.

(Before Vincent Pyke, Esq., R.M.) Wednesday, August 12th.

R. M'Kimmie was charged, upon information laid by the Inspector of Nuisances, with allowing his premises to remain in a filthy state. Fined 20s. and costs of Court.

M. Monaghan, Robert Hills, and H. May were charged with a similar offence. Mr. Hayes, agent for the property, stated that steps were being taken to abolish the nuisance complained of. Under these circumstances, the cases were dismissed upon payment of costs of Court.

Peter Robertson was charged with allowing a calf to wander within the Municipality of Lawrence. The ownership of the calf not being proved, the case was dismissed.

J. Thompson, charged with crossing the footpath in Ross Place, contrary to the municipal bye-laws, was find ss. and costs of Court.

H. W. Coverlid, for allowing a horse to wander within the Municipality of Lawrence, was fined 10s. and costs of Court.

Holmes {Town Clerk,) v. Gascoigne. Claim 12b. 6d. Defendant stated that he had sold the property for which rates were claimed some two months previous to the assessment for the Municipal year being made. Mr. Hayes said he purchased and paid for the land in question on behalf of M'Coll and Morrison in June 1869, Mr. Holmes stated that tho property had not been conveyed from Gascoigne to any one, and contended that until such conveyance had been made, he (Gascoigne) vras liable

for the rates. The R. M. said that a very important point had been raised, and he would take time to consider it. He would give judgment on the following Monday. Holmes ia. Walsh. Claim, L 5 12s. for rates. Amount paid into Court.

Holmes v. Clark. Claim. £5, for rates . Settled out of court. Hohncsv. Fowler. Claim £2 ss. for rates. Judgment confessed.
