August 9. No change has taken place in the quotations for grain or breads tuffs. Good milling wheat is coming in more freely, and as millers are not buying largely, the price can scarcely be said to be so firm. I'rime samples have been selling at 5s 3d and 5s 4<l, although as a rule parcels are being held for 5s 6d. Second class lots are not in demand. Fowl wheat is firm at 3s. In oats, nothing has been done. For good milling sorts, 2s is obtainable, and for feeding, trade lots are being bought at Is lOd. Barley continues in short supply, inferior 4s 6d to 4s 9J, and malting os 6d to 5s 9<L Potatoes are fairly supplied, and the prices firm at L 7. Flour meet* with a first rate trade demand at LI 3 in sacks, and Ll3 10s in bags. The market is quiet, but there is no appearance of lower rates being accepted. Oatmeal, Lll 15s ; bran, L 2 10s : pollard, L 5 10s ; hay, L 3 15s ; straw, L 2 ; chaff, LS 15s.
A. Mercer reports for the week ending August 10 : — Retail prices only — Fresh butter, in and lib prints, best quality, Is 4d to Is 6d per 1b ; second quality, Is 3d to Is 4d ; fresh butter in lumps, Is Id ; powdered and salt butter, best quality, Is 2d ; second, lOd to lid. My remarks last week are perfectly applicable to the present, the supply of fresh butter being still very limited and prices remain unaltered. Really go- d samples of salt butter are not to be had, and may be quoted from lOd to Is per lb. Cheese is in very good request; best quality is worth 8d to 9d ; second quality, 6d per lb. Side and rolled bacon is fetching 0d to lOd. Eggs are again a little more plentiful, and selling at la 9d per doz.
