THE LATEST SACRIFICE.
A Teviot correspondent informs us that the land applied for by Cargill and Anderson is bounded by Miller's run on the south, and extends half a mile north of the Teviot river, -and comes within a mile of the township of Roxburgh. The land is of fair quality — some of it excellent. It would not be so injm-ions to the district if' kept south of tho Teviot river, and sufficient room left along the banks of the Molyneux and sides of the hills to allow the construction of races from the Teviot river. The following telegrams have been transmitted on the subject : — Monday, July Ist. Cargill and Anderson have made application to the Waste Land Board to purchase 20,000 acres of land, to be taken from tlieii run, situate in the electoral district of the Dunstan. The low lands will not be sold. J. B. Bhadsiuw. Tuesday, July 2nd. Extends forty chains north of Teviofc river ; bub no part of Block 3, Shingle Block. Tracing will be sent per post. J. B. Biunsfuw. Tuesday, July 2nd. Application will be heard on Wednesday next. The Shingle Block is not included in the application. The application does not come within a mile of the river, in some parts one and a half miles. J. IS. Btt.VDSHAW. Tuesday, July 2nd. Mount Benger Progress Cemmittee deprecate the sale. If application is gianted, it will effectually stop construction of several races : and prevent eight miles of auriferous river frontage being woiked; .and also will include fully 5000 acres of first-class agricultural land. Request adjournment for three weeks for inspection of promise 1 tracing, J. M. Kinaston. Secretary. tVednesday, July 2nd. Application granted to day by JFasto Land Board. Sent you sketch by to-day's po&t, J. I>. Bkadsiiaw. Another correspondent- at Roxburgh sends us the following telegram :—: — Roxburgh, July 9th. Intense indignation felt here in regard to the 20,000 acre sale. It will stop all further water -tights from Teviot river ; seriously hamper those already existing ; permanently lock up a large area of payible. auriferous ground, and a considerable extent of agricultural land. The Government evidently mean to stamp out the population of this district, so as to give undisturbed possession to the squatters and their sheep.
