THE NORTH.
A new magazine, to be called the Church, Gazette, is about to be published in Auckland. A number of valuable swans belonging to the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, have been destroyed by dogs. An immense tiger shark fifteen feet long, has been captured a few days ago at the Kaikoura : the girth of its carcass was as great as that of a horse. The Provincial Council of Nelson have authorised the immediate construction of a tramway from the Brunner coal mine to Cobden, pending the completion of the rai>; to Greymouth. A case was heard in the Resident Magistrate's Court, Wellington, lately which should be told all over the colony. An hotel-keeper named Somerville ,was fined L 5 and costs, for taking frem a drunkea direputable man a packet of en /elopes, in payment for a glass of beer. The convicting evidence was obtained from the wife of the man who j obtained the drink. She some time ago had to ol>t iin a protection order against her hus- ] band, and had repeatedly complained to the police and to Somerville about his taking goods from her husband for drink. The wretch appears to have been in the habit of j taking soap, sugar, glasses, and one time a pair of decanters from her house for the purpose of getting drink.
