LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Town Connoil was held last Monday evening. Present — Crs. Mears, Williams, Coverlid, Uren, Walker, and Meyer.

Cr. Coverlid was voted to the chair.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Tha correspondence as follows was ad :—: —

Letter from the Mayor of Dunedin, regretting that the Council had not an opportunity of considering his scheme for the endowment of municipalities, and stating that it was ably represented by Mr. Bastings. — Received. Letter from J. A. Miller, applying for lease for 21 years of section 13, block XXVIII. ; letter from James Harris, requesting an extension of his lease of section 2, block XXIV., from 21 to 99 years ; also, letter from H . F. May, requesting permission to occupy -a portion of the old cemetery reserve. — Received, and referred to the Reserves Committee. Letter from Mr. Copland, solicitor for Mr. Middlemiss, re opening Canna-street through the Hospital grounds.— Received, and on the motion of Cr. Mears, seconded by Cr. Uren, the Town Clerk was directed to write to the Hospital Committee, informing them that unless the obstructions at present existing in Canna-street be removed, the Council ! would do so at the expense and risk of the Committee. The Town Clerk was instructed to forward a copy of theresolution to Mr. Copland. Letter fronrJFoong, Sem, and p-.irty, stating they had five men employed m fulfilling their agreement, re the storm channel, and requesting the Council to refrain from taking further action relative j to the acceptance of tenders. — Received, and referred to the Public Works Committee. Letter from Mr. Pyke, on behalf of himself aud others, requesting the Cjuncil to construct a bridge at lona- j street, and offering to construct the approaches thereto, in order that that locality might be brought " within the radius of municipal civilization ;" also, letter from A. Robertson, asking the Council to make a footpath in Ree-street. — Received, and referred to the Public Works Committee. •The Mayor's report upon the Municipal Act, 1867, was read and received. Cr. Mears moved that a Sub-Committee, consisting of Crs. Williams and Meyers, be appoiuted, with the assistance of the Town Clerk, to obtain legal assistance, to enable the Council to bring the portion of the new Act adopted into proper working order. . Seconded by Cr. Uren, and carried. The following accounts were referred to the Finance Committee :—": — " Tuapeka Times," £3 6s. 6d. ; Thomas Barnett, £6 3s. 6d. ; Thomas Anderson, £1 10 a. Several tenders for the work advertised to be done to the storm channel were held over, pending a report on the channel as completed, by the Public Works Committee. Cr. Mears brought under the notice ot . the Council the dangerous nature of the hole near Mr. O'Gorman's premised. The Town Clerk was instructed to" write to tho Mayor, requesting him to see the proper authorities aud have the matter attended to. On the motion of Cr. Mears, seconded by Cr. Uren; the Public Works Committee were instructed to attend to the alteration of the level of the channel near Mr. Low's I shop. j Cr. Uren moved, and Cr. Mears secondedthat the Pnblic Works «'ommittee be instructed to repair the bridge" in Stranraer-street. Carried. The Council then adjourned.
