DEPARTMENTAL REPORT. THE HIGH SCHOOL.

The Rector, in his annual report presented to the Provincial Council a few days ago, says of the school attendance during the past year :—": — " From my report for the year 1870, which was sent to your office, but, contrary to the usual practice, was not printed in the departmental reports, it wi'l be seen that the average attendance for that year was 120 ; the number on the school rolls for the four quarters being respectively 116, 121, 122, and 124. There has been a gradual increase in the number of pupils attending the school for the last three year 3 ; the number on the school roll being for the year 1869 seventy ; for 1870, eighty-eight ; and for 1871, one hundred and twenty ; and it is probable there will be an increase during the present year, the number of pupils iv attendance (during the first quarter being 137. It must be remembered that this increase has taken place concurrently with the rejection of a considerable number of boys who failed to pass the entrance examination, which was held, in accordance with the regulation of the Board, at the beginning of each year."
