ST. PATRICK'S ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL.

The quarterly examination of the above school was held on Friday, 17th inst. The Rev. Fathers Cardew and Larkin undertook the office of examiners, and closely .ex mimed the pupils in the various subjects taught. Tha French* and Latia -classes were specially praised for their proficiency, &c. There were very keen -contests for the medals presented by his Lordship Bishop Moran, and a highly commendable spirit of emulation twas shown afndngat the pupils. The following are the names of t'te. successful ■competitors: — John Roche, Ist senior division, Latin, -Geometry, and Writirig, "and Catechism of Christian Doctrine and Biblical Tests ; ■2nd prize, lstsenior division, John Griffen, ■Catechism and Biblical Texts. 2nd division — John Andrew Ryan, Ist, Catechism and Biblical Texts ; 2nd, John Lyon, do. - Girls Department- — Ist senior division — Sarah. Mooney, Catechism and Biblical Texts ; 2nd, Bridelia Roughan, d*o. 2nd division — Ist, Julia Driscoll, Catechism of Doctrine ; 2nd, Sarah Driscoll, do. After the distribution of prizes, Mr. Sproule, head master, returned thanks to ,the rev. examiners for their unremitting daring the day's examination. Mamer Roche, seniorpupil, then stepped forward, and read a concise and neatly worded address, thanking theTev. gentlemen for their attention and impartiality, to which the Rev. Father Cardew replied as follows ; — My dear young friends, I thank you very much for ,the nice address read on your behalf by your senior schoolfellow ; and the first compliment I must pay yon"is'to express the pleasure it gives me that you have a schoolfellow able to convey his, ideas with so much conciseness and precision. Of course this compliment, deserved and given, reflects directly and immediately on the teachers themselves ; and now I come to the 2nd objectofrayadmirationand praise, namely, theteachers. Any one knowingthe teachers or acquainted with them, would naturally .expect something from them in the schoolroom ; and, indeed, now that I have ■visited your school, and seen you examined in the various branches, I must say I have not been disappointed. As your school is conducted on the Christian Brothers' systejn, it is not necessary to allude to 'its characteristic features, namely, the general discipline that prevails, the decorum of the boys, and the modest tone of the girls. I thank your worthy pastor, Father Larkin; for honouring me, with the office of distributing the prizes. I have another motive for desiderating this honour, it is this, that as I have examined you myself rather closely, and perhaps severely, by rewarding merit. I have an- opportunity as it were, of pouring balm on your wounds, The.eSmpliment T respectfully desire to pay Father Larkin, is that when you admire every day the beauty and proportions of this large and magnificent edifice,-you will remember him who has laboured for its J erection — the duties of obedience, and respect you owe, and the duties you owe yourselves which are, a constant attend- I jance at school, and a persevering and,: earnest application to, your . studies . In ; conclusion, I beg to thank you once again lor your kind address. Mr. Hurley, who was present during part of thlß days proceedings, presented two young children id the girls department, Johanna Kelligber and Mary Jane Fahy, with a suitable present for their proficiency, &c. ■* . , ; ?7e may state, that the attendance at tn-i tfc'oo!
