REVENUE RETURN.
The. last Gazette contains the return of Customs revenue collected at the several ports of -the Colony for the quarter ending March 31, 1872. The total sura collected was L 196.283, as against L 171.481 for the corresponding quarter of 1871, showing an increase of L24,8u2. The increase is spread over most of the highest duty-paying articles — LSOOO on imported spirits, while the duty on spirits manufactured in the Colony has more than doubled ; of over LIOOO in tobacco ; wine, LI3OO, with a proportuuate increase on general commodities, and imported ale and porter. The increase on goods by measurement is L 5446, and on goods by weight, L 2032. The ad valorem duties have just doubled, the amounts being L 391 and L 768 respectively. Taking the returns of large towns, we find Dunedin is first, with an increase of L 10.40 4; Auckland next, with L 9,68 5; while the Thames, Wellington, Nelson, and Wanganui show decreases varying from LIOOO to L2OOO.
