A. Mercer reports for the week ending May 11 : — Retail prices only — Fresh butter, in 41b. and lib. prints, best quality, Is to Is Id per lb. ; second quality, lOd per lb. ; fresh butter in lumps, lOd per lb ; powdered and salted butter, lOd per lb; salt butter, in kegs, 9d per lb. The supply of fresh butter is still plentiful and storekeepers generally are giving the settlers a slight advance in price, but only for the best quality. The stocks of salted butter are still held in the hands of a few, and the sales this week have been limited. There is still an improvement observable in cheese but the quantity held in stock is lighter. Best quality from 6d to 8d per lb ; second quality, 6d per lb. Side and rolled bacon is very plentiful, and selling from 9d to lOd per lb. In Colonial hams there is still a brisk trade doing at Is per lb. Eggs are still exceedingly scarce and much enquired after ; storekeepers are unable to meet the demand, and prices ranges from 2s 6d Jto 3s per doz. The market in breadstuff's continues to be very firm. Flour is in first-rate demand at LI 2to Ll2 10s. The bakers are willing to stock at this price, but owing to the scarcity of wheat town millers are not prepared to quit parcels. Inferior flour is wanted at LI/* , Wheat suitable for this quality is scarce at J likely to be so. Oatmeal is quiet, at Ll2 10s Bran in good supply, at L 2 10s to L 2 15s. Pollard scarce and has been advanced to L 6. Pearl barley, L2O. Prime samples of milling wheat are enquired for at 4s 9d. The market just now is badly supplied, but considerable deliveries are expected during this week. Fowl wheat is almost out of the market, — the quantity available this season is small, and the farmers generally are using their screening for feeding purposes. Oats for milling are in moderate demand at Is lid, feeding are saleable at Is 9d. Malting barley can be placed at ss. Potatoes, L 4 10s. Hay, L 3 103. Chaff, L 2 10s. Straw, L 2 ss.
