HALF HOLIDAY. (To the Editor .)

Sib, — Permit me to congratulate Lawrence # on the- unanimity that exists amongst the principal business men regarding the weekly half holiday. On passing through the town last Friday, all the large stores were clossd — a step in the right direction. But in every community where the half-holiday movement has been started it has been found that some pettyminded and covetous individual will, after giving in his adherence to the movement, unscrupulously break hie word. It is a pity that when the half holiday seems to be an accomplished fact, and all acquiesce in its desirability, its success should bo marred in this manner. It evidently shows that those who break through the rule are not able to compete on a fair and legitimate footing with their fellow-tradesmen, and resort to underhand measures, such as keeping their business places, open during the time devoted to recreation. I hope- this wilL not be the case with- Lawrence half-holiday movement, and it does not seem likely that it will, for during a walk I ' took on Friday afternoon I only saw one* small grocer's shop open, and from the amount of business being done, I think* he might as well have closed. If all closed all would be on an equal footing, and I trust that che parties interested will see it in the same light. Hoping that the halfholiday movement in Lawrence will be an unequivocal success, — I am, &c, Traveller.
