CONFERENCE OF MAYORS.
May 1. The adjourned meeting of the Conference was held this afternoon, in the City Council Chambers. The Mayor of Dunedin occupied the chair ; and there were, besides his Wor ship, seven other members of the Conference present. The Conference proceeded at once to discuss the Government proposal, as detailed in his Honor the Superintendent's speech to the Provincial Council. Several members expressed their views on tbe subject, and thereby elicited a general feeling of satisfaction of the manner in which the wishes of the Conference had been entertained by the Government It was, however, pointed out by f»ome members, that in their own particular districts the condition about " keeping in repair the main raods,"&c, would nearly or quite consume| the whole of the revenue with which the municipality was proposed to be endowed. It was therefore resolved, on motion of the Mayor of Lawrence, seconded by the Mayor of Oamaru, to request the Government to limit the condition to the municipality of Dunedin. May 2. The Conference met in the City Council Chambers at three o'clock this afternoon, the Mayor of Dunedin in the chair, and there were present six other members. Mr Basting (Mayor of Lawrence) reported the result of the interview with the Government by the deputation appointed yesterday to try and induce them to withdraw the coudition respecting the maintenance of the main roads through the municipalities, which was in effect that the Government did not see their way clear to recede from the position taken up. It should, however, be understood that till the roads re erred to | were all made and put in a thorough state of | repair by the Government, no expense would fall upon the municipalities. That so scon as the Government were in funds, they would make and thoroughly repair the roads, and then the expense would be comparatively light. Mr Bastings subse- I quently added that the Government had stated that, should the arrangement as propo ed be agreed to, they would be prepared favorably to entertain any instances of special hardship that might arise out of it. After a sort of informal discussion of the matter, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of the Mayor of Lawrence, seconded by the Mayor ot Clyde, to accept the offer of the Government, and to urge the representatives of their several districts to support the Government in briuging into effect the proposed scheme. * May 3. The adjourned meeting was held in the City Council Chambers this afternoon. {Several members reported that they had had inte» views with the representatives of their own and other country districts, and that there seemed to be a general disposition to support the Government -scheme. It was resolved that every effort be made by members of the Conference to render the measure successful. On the motion of the Mayor of Lawrence, the thanks of the Conference were awarded to his Worship the Mayor of Dunedin, who having suitably replied, the Conference was dissolved.
