A TAPANUI QUERY.

(To the Editor.) Sir,— vlt has long been a matter of much surprise to me to know what has become of our once active and energetic Progress Committee. While they were alive and held together, they accomplished a number of works against great and well-known difficulties, which even now prevents their name from sinking into inglorious oblivion. " But for the last two years not a w'usper has been heard of their doings — if they have done anything. Winter with its attendant discomforts in the shape of muddy streets, &c, &c, is fast approaching, and it is therefore, a most opportune moment for. their revivification. I am aware that some of the members have left the neighbourhood, but those who remain have an easy and open cburse to pursue* Let them call to their assistance a few men Whom they know are prepared and willing to work — and I am sure there are some such in tbe township — and do something before it is too late. Not long ago, the government made them an offer of fifty pounds to effect certain improvements on a simple condition, but this offer, which in all probability would have been increased, has been heedlessly neglected, and may not now be obtained without a little difficulty. There' are men among the Progress Committee, who thoroughly know the requirements of the township, and have energy and perseverance enough to carry them out, still they don't do it. If they have not time, why should they not resign and let others take* their' places — but I would not recommend this, as no better could be obtained if they would only work. I should like extremely £b see some action taken in this matter, and will be very happy to avail myself of your columns for the purpose of sounding their praise whenever anything is done. — I am. &c, • Civis. Tapanui, April 27th, 1872.
