WAITAHUNA CHRISTY MINSTRELS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, — In your account of the performance recently given by the local Christy Minstrels, mention is made of the company being almost placed in a fix by my sudden resignation, after attending the necessary rehearsals for the proper performance of the entertainment given by them. Now, sir, this is an untrnth, as every member of the local Minstrels knows. The individual attending the rehearsals and leading the company was Mr. James Pennel, jun., but he having accidentally cut his finger, was unable to proceed. Application was then made to me to supply his place, and my name announced on the placards, without my own knowledge or consent, being engaged working from home, and coming in only three or four days before the concert, and unable to attend any rehearsal at all, and not being furnished with the music of the songs, except two or three. lat once saw nay position, and immediately wrote to thfem, informing them that I could not manage what was required in time. This, sir, is the real statement of the facts of the case. Whether I placed them in a fix or not is a mere matter of opinion. • Had I in a bombastic manner placed myself on a public platform without proper rehearsal, to perform what I knew nothing about, I might have placed myself in a great fix. As Mr. Turner supplied the deficiency, 1 think that no one has any occasion to complain or misrepresent facts or individuals. Had 1 known the melodies, perhaps I might have been able to play them, but to take the part of " Johnson " is rather out of my line. Trusting that you will admit this into your columns injustice to myself, — I am, &c, Thomas Eaton.
