LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnighfc'y meeting of the Lawrence Town Council was held on Monday night last. Present : Councillors Coverlid, Walker, Williams, Uren, and Mears. Cr. Coverlid was voted to the chair. The^ninntes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The correspondence, as follows, was then re id: — Lettt'r from Mr. Copland, requesting, ou behalf of Mr Middlemiss, an answer to his communication of January 9th, reUthe to the opening of the road between Canna aud Whitehaven streets. Received, and the Town Clerk was in- ! strnoted to forward a reply to Mr. Cop- | land Jn reference to this matter, Cr. Mears observed that public bodies in Lawrence seemed to have fallen into a habit of treating parties communicating with them in a very disconrteousmanner, which "he hoped would not be continued. Letter from the Inspector of Nuisances, recommending that the drain opposite Mr. Lyng's premises be at once cleaned, as it was in a filthy condition ; also drawing attention to a hole in corporation property, opposite Mr. Blewitt's residence. .Received, and referred to the Public Works Committee. Cr Mears remarked that Mr. Humphrey had expressed his intention of filling . up the drain opposite Mr. Lyng's, ami had given a man a written indemnification ,to .do so. He thought that if it was attempted to fill up the drain, .legal steps [ should at once be taktn. The Public Works Committee were empowered to take legal advice,, fa the event of Mr. Humphrey filling up tile, drain. The Finance Report was received and. adopted.
