MOUNT BENGER JUSTICE. (To the Editor.)

Sir, — My friend, old Muddle, is very anxious to know if the same law respecting tipplers is in force in Lawrence, Dunedin, and other parts of the province as that which is dispensed at the Roxburgh Court House. An esteemed, venerable friend of his recently had the misfortune of being called to sccount for being what in Court etiquette is called drunk and disorderly, for which, being the first oft'ence, he was fined the very moderate sum of £7 13s. 6d. In your last issue old Muddle observes that at Lawrence, for the same offence, an unfortunate was only fined 10s., and he understands the Dunedin tariff is ss. He therefore inclines to think that in Mount Benger we live under a different dispensation, and, as he very properly remarks, '" In this world all are fallible and liable to err ; " and that although he has been a teetotaller for a couple of years, he may just possibly be subject to a relapse. He therefore seriously entertains a notion of migrating to more genial quarters, where, should he make a slip, the magistrate may comiserate with him and his misfortunes at a more reasonable charge than that inflicted by the president of the Total Abstinence Society. Now, as lam loth to part with my old friend and neighbour, will you kindly oblige by setting his doubts at rest ? for I cannot. — I am, &*c., Timo. - Roxburgh, March 21st, 1872.
