ROAD BOARD.

MEETING AT WAITAHUNA,

(From our own Correspondent.)

A public meeting was held at Coghill's Hotel, Havelock, on Saturday, March 16th, to consider what steps should be taken to prevent the establishment of the proposed Eoad Board in the Tuapeka district.

Mr. Stevenson was voted to the chair. He read a copy of the notice calling tbe meeting, and said it appeared to be the desire of the Lawrence people to have a Road Board. B c had nothing to say against it, but he was certainly opposed to any portion of the Wai labuna district being included within tbe proposed Road Board boundaries. He Understood that the greater part of Waitahuna West was included, and he thought that some steps should be taken to prevent such a division of the dis trict being effected. He would call on Mr. Mackay to addopss the meeting.

Mi\ Maekay, the convener of the meeting, explained his reason for calling them together, and spoke against tbe conduct of the Lawrence people in coolly proposing to cut off nearly half the Waitahuna district, in order that they may be enabled to cany out their grand scheme of having a district Road Board. He urged prompt and decisive action in the matter, on the part of those present.

« Mr. Poison entered into an explantion of the past and present condition of Lawrence, and also explained the centralising policy of its Mayor. He was not opposed to the formation of Road Boards, but he did not consider the district ripe enough for any such change. He decidedly objected to the division of the "Waitahuna district, as was proposed to be dove by those who had this matter of tbe Road Board ia hand. ' He would move: — "That this meeting while fully recognising the importance of Road Boards, desire to express the opinion that it isjarema-

ture to establish a Road Board in this district."

Mr. D. Ryan moved:— "That this meeting protests against any portion of this district being united to Tuapeka to form a Road Board."

Several gentlemen supported the motions, which were carrier] unanimously. Messrs. Poison, Mackay, Stevenson, Ryan, and Heath were appointed a committee to draw up a petition, and forward a copy of the resolutions to his Honor the Superintendent*.
