MINING INTELLIGENCE.
A late Tasmanian Government " Gazette " gives the quantity of gold in bullion exported from that colony during last year at only 3702 ounces, valued at £14,218.
Special efforts have been made for some time in Victoria to effect the saving of pyrites at the quartz-crush-ing machines. The present plan appears to be the introduction of tucks or plaits in the blankets, about two feet apart. Blankets are now specially manufactured for this purpose, and are said to act satisfactorily. To show the importance with which the saving and treatment of pyrites and other " refuse " is viewed in Victoria, we need only quote the fact that the- return of gold obtained from the source in that colony since March 31 of last year was no less than 9000ozs. •' The " Gre^ River Argus " gives the following latest news from Reefton : — Rumours are flying about of the discovery of some immensely rich Stone, distant, as far as I can learn, about ten miles north of Reefton. Report says that the lucky discoverers dug into the reef to a. depth of two feet, and obtained 4|ozs. of gold from hand-crushed stone. Starvation is imminent unless immediate steps are taken relative to the construction of a good road. There will not be a supply of the common necessaries of life to satisfy the demand. At the present moment; there are not five tons of flour in the place, with a population of 500 to 600 souls, and that numb.er being augmented daily. The revenue, for miners' rights, business licenses, leases, &c, for the last twenty days is £1000. Shiel's prospecting claim is getting richer stone than ever ; also in Rhody Ryan's .claim, next to Kelly's boundary, they are getting magnificent stone. Rumours of new discoveries, says the " West Coast Times," of auriferous quartz reefs seem to be cropping up daily. Tbe last to hand comes from the Ross district, where it is stated a reef has • been discovered in the fork between the left -hand branch' of Donnelly's ■ Creek and the . main .stream.
Some of the quartz claims in Victoria and New South Wales are giving extraordinary yields. A b Majouca, the Gladstone Company had a yield of $85 ounces from 80 tons of stone ; an.d at Tambacoora 30 tons of stuff fro.in Paxtqft's olajq} yie^4e4 17QQ ounces of
