ALEXANDRA
(From our own Correspondent.)
The Christmas holidays are fairly over, and the miners have once more set into work. On the east side of the Molyneux, race owners cum plain greatly about the scarcity of water. Those on the west side of the river have plenty of water, hut unfortunately are not doing much. The Ovens Company's claim, on the Manuherikia has been flooded, and two months will elapse before they will be able to resume work. This Company' 3 claim, on the Molyneux, is not paying so well as formerly. The Manuherikia Company are doing very little. The shareholders are not agreeiug so well as they should. There are several shares in this Company in the market, but they don't appear to attract the attention of purchasers, although it has the best water right in the district. The Conroy's Reef crushing mill, is in full work again. They are ouly working the top level, the stone in which looks remarkably well. The lower level is still a mystery, but it is hoped it will" turn out trumps, At the Butcher's Gully reef, work is being vigorously proceeded with. The workmen are driving along the lode. In my next I hope to be able to give you the result of a crushing. On the Bth inst., the annual statutory meeting for the election of a school committee, was held in the schoolhouse. About 20 householders were present. The gist of the report read by the Chairman, Mr. Chappie, is as follows : — The Schoolmaster had not furnished the Committee with the attendance for the last 12 months, but had supplied them with a list of the fees unpaid, which showed an amount of over £LOO due, (a state of things which the Committee very much deplored). The Committee had . again made application to the Education Board, for a grant of money to enlarge the school, but without success. The report was adopted, and a vote of thanks accorded to the retiring Committee. A new Committee was then elected, consisting of the* following gentlemen: — Messrs. Chappie, Theyers, Beresford, Fiulay, Rivers, Calder, and W. Robertson. There was something said about the Schoolmaster's charges for books, which the new committee promised to inquire into. The first meeting of the newly elected committee, took place the same evening. Mr. Chappie was again elected Chairman, Mr. Theyers was elected Treasurer, and Mr. Beresford, Secretary. There was nothing else done except passing accounts for payment. I believe, although there is a large amount of unpaid fees on the books, the liabilities do not exceed £5.
