THE TUAPEKA RAILWAY.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — Some weeks ago you published a leader pointing out the necessity for fresh and continued agitation in order to secure the immediate construction of the above named line. Tt appears, from reliable information which I have just received, -that Government (acting upon its reserved rights to select which lines should be first constructed) has quietly shelved the Tuapeka Railway, nominally for twelve months. Hud Mr. Cobden's old, well-known and good advice, " Agitate ! Agitate ! ! Agitate ! ! ! " been acted upon, T am humbly of opinion that the railway -would have been under construction in less than twelve months. How is it that your suggestions wei'e not adopted? I understand that Mr. Reeves, the' Minister for Public Works,, is to be Dunedin next week, and will visit this locality with His Honor the Superintendent, in order to inspect the route of the proposed line. May I suggest that a deputation be appointed to wait upon these gentlemen, in order to induce them to urge upon Government the importance, of the line, the necessity which exists for its immediate construction and the benefits which would accrue to the District, Province and Colony. The number of lines already undertaken,, by Government, for immediate construction precludes the possibility of the Tuapeka line being proceeded with, if any postponment takes place. We may make up our minds that it is a case" of " now or never." — I am, &c., John L. Shadwell Kebn t . Lawrence, lOfch January, 1872.
