ALEXANDRA SCHOOL.

Sir, — Your correspondent "Alexandra " has given to my report of the results of my examination of the Alexandra School a wrench which makes the words couvey an impression exactly opposite fjo that intended by me, and which cannot be passed unnoticed.
I said that the school was quite up to the average, and that we had no right to Jook for anything more ; and that the condition of the school was very creditable to. Mr. Reid. By "up to the average," I mean that the children displayed fully that amount of knowledge, general and particular, which might reasonably be expected from children of their respective ages. I did not say "certainly nothing more," as your correspondent reports. •J thought the state of the school justified a favourable report, and my words were intended to give a favourable impression to those present ; that it was not given in stz'onger language was because I object to unnecessary use of superlatives. The classes under Miss Fraser's charge displayed equal proficiency with the rest, and that I did not mention her name favourably at the time was an oversight, for which I
now make amends,
I examined the school at the request of the committee, in the hope that if the condition of the school warranted a favourable report, the difficulties which now seem to exist between Mr. Reid and the school committee might be got over. If perverse misconstruction of my words is to give an entirely opposite effect to the whole affair, I must regret that my object is frustrated, and cannot help sympathising with Mr. Reid, who seems to have, in addition to other difficulties, an unreasonable opposition to contend with.
