TUAPEKA HOSPITAL.

A special meeting of the Committee of the above institution was held in tbe Commercial Hotel on Friday, the Bth instant. There was a good attendance Mr. Bastings, President, occupied the chair, and in opening the proceedings, said the meeting had been specially con vened by himself. From the fact thai tbe three months' notice given to the Resident Surgeon had expired, it would be necessary for the Committee to consider what should be done with reference to a surgeon during tbe remainder of their term of offie<\ They were •aware the doctor's salary was sHll going on, and that they would require to find ways and means to carry on tbe institution till January, when a fresh Committee would be elected.

As the monthly meeting had lapsed for want of a quorum, the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

In reference to one part of the minutes, the Chairman remarked that a letter had been received by Father Larkin. in which Bishop Moran stated tbat he would be glad to deliver a lecture on behalf of the institution. He could not, however, state any time, as that would depend on circumstances over which he bad no control, but when he came to Lawrence he would gladly avail himself of tbe opportunity of complying with the wishes of the Committee.

The Secretary intimated that be bad written to all those persons with whom subscription lists bid been entrusted.

The question of ways and means was then considered by the Committee. After a lengthened conversation, it was calculated that subscriptions to the amount of £150 would, together with subsidy on that sura, be sufficient to meet all liabilities up to the end of the financial year ; jjnd if tbe sunKcriptions approached the sirm they did last year, the new Committee would have a fair start.

The Chairman stated tbat he had gone round with a subscription list but he found tbat nearly every person he went to had put bis name on Mr. Hay's Hat, so be gave up the attempt to do an y thing.

Dr. Halley remarked tbat Mr. Hay volunteered to get subscriptions. He did not think he hod got any money.

H>re the Sec- «t ry went outside to see Mr. Hay, but did not succeed.

Mr. Simpson moved, and Mr. Herbert seconded, " That Mr. Hay be requested to deliver the list to the Secretary, and if he refused, that means be taken to obtain it."

It was generally remarked by the members that Mr. Hay rlid not collect any money, but simply took the names.

The question of the Resident Sur geon's salary was then discussed.

Mr. Simpson moved, " Tbat the doc tor's ailary be reduced to £250, and that he be allowed private practice."

It was stated that the Clyde Hospital Committee were advertising for a medical man, and they were only offering £150, with residence and private practice.

Mr. Abel thought tbat food and evervthius: was included. -

Dr. TTalley stated tbat boar*l was not included in the ,£l5O.

Mr. A bel, as a matter of form, so as to test the feeling of the mee L msr, would second Mr. Simpsou's proposition, although he wou'd prefer to see the present arrangement carried on to the end of thpir term of office.

Mr. Simpson said his proposal bad reference ,only to the term of the present Committee — to be commenced at once, and confirmed or not as the cace might be at the annual meeting. Dr. Halley asked if it was In their power to do more than recommend to to the public meeting'

, Mr. Simpson* said he looked upon it simply as, a matter of production. , Mr. M'Kinynie thougbt.it would be nucb better tb^eave the discussion «f 'ihe aubfec^ to tfegi, Bubßcribers.' :Tte leould. move," as atra~mendfnent, "That }Dr\ Stewart be askeil to' continue," his" lervicetf'tp.tbe fnstitutioh fill the, iinnuM' when "another" pr(H , jobrJ wolild He made to'binv ffnd"no£ ' to require three-months notice/ i Seconded by Mr. Livingston. The amendment was carried.

Dr. btewart having been sent for, the proposal'' w**-isade Jx> him, -on vrbich he replied tbat he was perfectly

agreeable' to come to any arrangement, so long as be got proper treatment, and tbat he considered so. . The Chairman hoped those gentlemen who had Hats would send them in, so that the Hospital would be left in a good position. From the Eeaident Strgeon's monthly report wlii-h was laid O'i the taMe, v c observed that there are 20 patients inthe Hospital
