TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting' of tho Tjjvß-renee Town Council was held in the Commercial Assembly Room, on Monday evening last. Present — the Mayor, and Crs. Meyer, Coverlid, Uren, Walker, aud Williams.

The minutes of the previous meetings were read and confirmed. Letters were received from the School Committee, the Hospital Committee, and Mr. H. A. Robinson. The School Committee inquired the value of the prizes the Council intended to give at the forthcoming annual examination of the Lawrence Grammar School. The Mayor stated that last year the Council had given a gold medal as a prize, for the boys, and a desk for the yirls, and ah that time it was intended that similar prizes should be giveu annually. Cr. Williams, while of opinion that it was a highly 'laudable practice to encourage the scholars attending the school l>y giving prizes, considered that the state of their finances would not enable them to be so liberal at present as they were last year. He anggestfid that two prizes should be given of the value of £3 and £2 respectively.

Cr. Meyer moved that the Council give a gold medal, cost not to exceed £5, as a P"ize to the best scholar in the Lawrence Grammar School.

Cr. T'ren seconded fhe motion.

Cr. Walker said if the Oounci l . gave a prize to the Lawrence Grammar School, it would be nothing but fair that one should b« given to the other pxxblic school, should application be made.

Cr. Cove 1 d was given fco understand that an application for a prize would \>e nut in on behalf of t.h« Tuapeka Academy. Should such application be made, he certainly vrould be in favour of granting it. ' The Mayor remarked that it was " time to bid a man good day when you met him." Tt wotild be timo to. consider whether a prise should be given to the Tuapeka Academy when an application was put in, but he thought no Councillor would oppose the giving of a prize to Mr. Spronle's school. The motion was then put and carried. The Hospital Committee requested the Council not to grant the application which had been made to them to throw open the cross street upon which the Hospital fence encroached, as doing so would seriously injure the Hospital property, and would benefit nobody. The matter was referred to the Legislative Committee. . !L \ % ; f-i . \ Mr. H. A.. Robinson applied for permission. to mine for gold on some ground at the b'aclf 'of Ross'Place. Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr. Robinson,~requestittg him to fill up some holes on the Gabriels track, in accordance with the terms of his agreement with the Council. ' In answer to Cr. Williams,

The Mayor stated that he had been in communication with the Provincial Government in reference to the payment of the subsidy. The Government had recently informed him tl-at (he subsidy would be forthcoming shortly.

The Town Clerk was directed to write to the Government requesting payment of the overdue subsidy.

Cr. Walker drew attention to the state of the culvert in Campbelltown-street. The Public Works Committee were directed to take immediate action in the matter.

The Town Clerk stated that the amount of last year's rates remaining uncdllooted was Ll7. He was directed lo carry out his instructions in reference to enforcing the payment of arrears.

Cr. Walker stated that there was a leak in one of the flood boxes of the lower reservoir. The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee, who were .requested to take immediate steps to have the leak stopper 1 . The Council then adjourned.
