BOXBURGH PERRY

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — In your last wsuo a letter appeared which either originated or put in circulation a report that a certain wealthy squatter was about to erect a bridge at Roxburgh, taking payment in land. This report, I can assure you, is without the slightest foundation, and I presume originated with certain parties who have* what is technically termed a, " down " on tbe proprietors of the ferry. Permit me to remark that this appears a curious way of venting their uploen, as the heavy compensation the Government would have to pay in the event o\' the abolition of the ferry would no doubt amply recoup the proprietois for their loss. As the motive, however, ia evidently malicious, I presume, sir, a few remarks on the present management of the ferry will not be out of place. And firstly, as to tbe moderation of charges: in no case is tne scale appointed by Government come up to by the Roxburgh Ferry Company ; out of a desire to accommodxite the public they actually charge less than they are legally entitled to do. Then in regard to i*esidents whose business compels them frequently to cross and recross, the very modest sum of 4s. per woek is charged. In short, to sum up, the punt is ample at present for all the wants of the inhabitants of Roxburgh, and whatever defects are- inseparable from such a mode of transit are smoothed over by the obliging and affable characters of those in charge. As a matter of common justice, I hopevou will not refuse to insert this. —
