LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the Town Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening. Our leporter waited fully half an hour after the usual hour of meeting, and seeing no appearance of a meeting being held, retired . We learn, however, that a meeting was held. The Town Clerk has favoured us with a copy of the minutes, which we publish as follows :—: —

CORRESPONDENCE.

A letter from. Mr. John Donovan. The Town Clerk stated that he had an inierview with Mr. Donovan, asking payment for leasing a coiner section he!d by him, and .he advised him to wrl*e the Council asking if he could have the section for a lump sum. Tuis was the 1 purport of Mr. Donovan's letter. Cr. Meyer proposed and Cr. Uren seci -nded. " I hat the Town Cleric reply to Mr. Dounfcu/s letter informing him that t'uey expect him to abide by the terms of his letter of 2nd January last, viz., £4 10i," carried. The foll'twiig amend nrMit was proposal by Cr. Coverlid, anl seconded by C»\ "Uren :—": — " That the. Council c uifirim the resolution of Cr. Meyer," seconded by <V. Coverlid, of date 19oh September, 1871, placing applicant for section 14, bioox xii., on siima footing a* applicants for other sections." Cr. Mears proposed, " That the matter' be allowed to stand over fi>r oleo le mouth with the view of earing the legality of the meeting of the 19&h September. " As this proposition had no seconder, the original motion was carried.

[We might state here, by way of exnlanaiion; that the Reserves Committee first of ail arranged that the- disputed section, No. 14, block xii., should be sold with other sections. On the following day after the meeting when it.was drfcided to take that step, Mr. Walker culled upon the Town Clerk when the books were examined, which- showed that the said sec-, ftiou was one which he (Mr. Walker) h.id previously applied for. A special call of the Council was then made for last Monday evening to rescind the resolution which was the principal business ' before tlie Council. Cr. Mears characterised the meeting of September 19rh as a hole and cunier one, upon which the Town Clerk refuted the imputation by seating that a notice of the meeting had been served upon each Councillor.] .Ciy Mears proposed, and Cr. Coverlid seconded, " That the Town Glerk.instruct Mr. M. ITay to advertise and : .sell the sections now at the disposal of the Council." ' The Town Clerk was also instructed to bring up a report uf - arreara of rates' for the year 1870-1.
