BLUB SPUE.
(From our Mining Correspondent.)
Since my last, as there has been, nothing social, political, or fllegal, on the board, it is all work and no play. At one time during the winter months we could get up Penny Readings, a Quadrille Assembly, or something to pass an hour or two ; but now our stars have either betaken themselves to local preaching, or nursing babies — both, perhaps, very good in their way, but not very congenial to the tastes of the few miserable bachelors left, who have neither talent to appreciate ' the one, or pluck to tackle the other, though there are plenty of chances either way. And to add further to our misfortunes, we axe a constant prey to the rapacious people of Lawrence, who, between subscriptions for one thing, or collections for another, manage to keep us pretty well alarmed ; and even when fair means faii, to send up two indefatigable fascinating ladies to stick up and softsoap, or bounce, our few remaining miserables out of the few shillings left, is awful ; and for what —to build a new manse or parsonage, or something of the sort, as if you had not plenty already. I shouldn't wonder but the next subscrip- i tion will be to pay for shoe leather ; they must go through a deal of boots, flowever, mining matters are in rather a more prosperious state. There is plenty of water, consequently all the claims are at work. The Waipori Water Race Company have determined to increase their summer supply by enlarging their beach race from the Beaumont. They have about 15 men employed at the work, which will take three or four weeks to complete.
The Great Amalgamated or Hip and Tare Company have also finished their washing, ■with, ■what they term satisfactory results, considering the great amount of lost time (about five months in nine), and the rather antiquated way they have of working, says a deal for the ground. - The Great Extended Company and Messrs. Hales and Hinde are both driving. Very little has been heard from the British American lately. A small explosion was heard in their direction the other day, so it is presumed they are still alive.
The Perseverance Company have had some trouble getting the water over the claim to the face, owing to the ground giving "way. They have still plenty of loose stuff to operate on.
Messrs. Livingston & Co. have struck a seara of remarkably rich. cement in their claim) which no doubt will to raise the drooping spirits of the shareholders after tIA disappointment of the last washing. \"
