TUAPEKA. MOUTH.

A soiree and ball took place in the Scholhouse here on Friday, 29th inst., for the. benefit of the school funds, and notwithstanding the expenses of bringing the eatables f'Oiu. Lawrence, I believe the surplus money will nearly pay off the debt which is d.ue by the Committee. After every one was satisfied with the good things provided, the surplus was put up for sale by mock auction, and realised the sum of 4s, showing tkere was plenty and io spare. After an interval of a few minutes, which was allowed for the purchasers to remove their goods, the secretary took the chair, and- stated that instead of speeches, as on former occasions, they would be entertained with readings and songs. Messrs. Clark, Mathews, and Launders read very appropriate pieces,' especially the latter gentleman, who by his comicalities, both in words and gestures, eliceted loud applause. Messrs. Greev.es, Smith, A. Cameron, Marshall, Little, and Buchanan sung excellent songs, and if it is any criterion to judge by the encores and other marks of approbation, their vocal talents were much appreciated by the audience. Mr. Matthews proposed a vote of thanks to the ladies who eificiated at the tables, viz,, Mesdames Matthews, M'Millen, and Miss North. Then was heard from the loud stentorian voice of our worthy M.C., Mr. Smith, " places for the first seT," and dancing was kept up -till beyond the wee hours, when all [.returned home, much pleased with their } evening's enjoyment, ,
