NOKOMAI.

(From our own Correspondent.)

Matters are not progressing towards the formation of the proposed company for sinking a shaft in the flat ; everybody wishes it done, everyone believes in it, and nobody does it, or anything towards it, but that cher.peat of all commodities — talk. If jealousy could b© put aside, and the inhabitants as individuals give a long pull, a strong pull, and a pull altogether, and subscribe some capital amongst themselves to show the merchants and speculators their own earnest belief in the merits of the proposed scheme, there is no doubt they would obtain sufficient assistance to carry out the venture ; but they won't agree, and so the matter lies, and is likely (until they do) to remain in abeyance. The storekeepers would reap the benefit, and are the men to take the matter in hand in the first instance, but I am afraid it is almost hopeless to expect them to agree amongst themselves ; and so, without private enterprise comes in, I begin to tear the flat will not be bottomed for many a long day.

I have nothing new to report in mining matters. The population has slightly increased since my last as regards Europeans, and largely as to Chinese; but I know of no returns beyond usual.

The anticipated evening entertainment has been deterred from being held by the late very bad weather, but I hope will shortly take place, as we are now enjoying perfect summer. I only hope the promoters will do better than earn success, deserve it, and follow up their first attempt with energy.
