EVANS FLAT.

(Fiom a, Correspondent.)

The Beaumont and Tuapeka "Waterrace Company will have their full quantity or men on the ground by Monday, and I trust that the undertaking may prove successful. It is their intention to bring this race as far as Tuapeka Mouth. On reaching the saddle, they purpose beginning operations in the way of working the ground ; and from the quantity of water they will have at their command, there is little doubt but the ground there will pay well. We shall also be able to make use of this race at Evans Flat, where the lower hills, and some of the flats, may be worked to some advantage at present.

I regret to state that the miners here are barely making tucker. One or two claims in Munros Gully, that are worked on rather an extensive scale, are making fair returns. Tn this gully we have four parties of Chinamen who, from all appearances, have erected rather permanent huts, and seem to be content with the little that is doing.

I am glad to state that a private school has been opened in this district, and I may add that an institution of this kind was much wanted, where there are upwards of thirty children who were going to no school, not being able to go a loug distance on account of the state of the roods, and the danger attached to crossing creeks. I need scarcely add that the parents have one and all united in giving the teacher every encouragement. Our flour mill has lately changed hands, the present proprietors being Messrs. liobinson and Sandison, who are .making extensive alterations, together with an addition of twenty feet to the present building, so as to be in a position to meet the increasing trade. I wish the new proprietors every success.
