WESLEYAN BEGGING.
(To tlic Editor.)
Sir, — I was somewhat taken aback yesterday to see the Wesleyans so soon again in the field with their subscription list.
No doubt their proverbial modesty and polite humility entitle them to attack the purses of the public more frequently than other denominations, especially when it is thus so clearly displayed by the gentlemen (owing, I suppose, to their being so bashful) giving place to the ladies as collectors.
No doubt, also, they are entitled to liberal encouragement in consequence of the noble manner in which so many of them contribute. on the lists of other denominations. In fact, where is the subscription list for any good object without a considerable sprinkling of Wesleyans on it?
At the same time as these lists press so heavily on the public at present, and Jthe purses of the regular contributors are so nearly empty, I would take this opportunity simply to suggest that instead of launching oui their money to every other good cause in the district so freely as they have done, the Wesley ans might as well divert it on this, occasion to themselves, and thereby give a little breathing thno to yours truly,
The Public Purse. Lawrence, September 19.
