The s. s. Balclutha arrived at Glenelg on the 26th August, with the English news, via Suez. The dates from England are to 7th August.

GENERAL SUMMARY.

The troop-ship Megaera reached the Cape of Good Hope safely, andleft again for Austi*alia, but was lost on the voyage. The crew were saved.

The conference on colonial affairs commenced in London on July 19th, under the brighest auspices, the Duke of Manchester presided. The Pope is indisposed, M. Thiers threatens to resign the Presidency of the French Republic.

The Emperor of Brazil, and the Prince Impeiial of Germany are still in England, and a series of Royal fetes has been given. The Prince of "Wales, the Princess Louise, and the Marquis of Lome afterwards visited Ireland, and were enthusiastically received. Fenianism is still rife. The Government announced the abolition of the system of purchase in the Army by Royal consent, although the House of Lords rejected the Bill. The mail by the City of Adelade reached San Fsancisco on the 31st day from Sydney. The Prince of Wales has returned from the Continent. The Queen is at Osborne. Fenian rioting took place at Dublin but was suppressed. A bank manager has been murdered in Ireland, and a large amount of money stolen. The Government have abandoned the intended autumn encampment of militia and volunteers. Di- Dollinger has been elected Rector of the Munich University. The Duke of Richmond, in the House of Lords, carried a vote of censure on the Government. Lord Ash brook is dead. The Government have been in communic \tion with the French authorities respecting the proposed transportation of Communists to New Calefibnia. Ensign Humphrey won tre Queen's Prize aKWimbledon. The Rev. Mr. Jones has been elected President of the Wesleyan Conference, j The Czar of Russia has created the Prince of Saxony a Marshal. The Spanish Ministry has l-esigned. M. Thiers has announced his intention to aid in preserving the Pope's indepen- 1 dence. Germany has received a considerable portion of the war indemnity from France. •
