THE. MUNICIPALITY
(TqiheEa\itor.)
Rib, — Tlie serious question, How isour Hospital to be carried -on with its. .usual efficiency now that the Government subsidy is considerably reduced,? h#s been presented for the consideration of the subscribers and supporters of that institution, aud a similar question suggests itself in connection with our Municipality. The present income, now that the subsidy is withdrawn, 1 believe ie about £400, the bare expenditure being something above £300 ; then how are public works, to say nothing of minor matters, to be performed? It is evident that if the Council is to be anything more than an ornament (?) to the town, some plan for creating revenue will have to be introduced, and seeing that retrenchment is becoming a universal motto, perhaps our Town Council could not do better in the mean time than adopt it also. In my own opinion their expenditure could be greatly curtailed — I mean in the way of Tent, salaries, water &c. At all events, I consider the ratepayers ought to be invited to give an expression of opinion in the matter — it is they who have to supply the needful, and surely they ought to H» personally consulted on so important a subject as municipal impocunioaity. £ would suggest that a public meeting of ratepayers be called at ouce. I ara &c Hatbpayba.
