SWITZERS. (From our own Correspondent.) .^

Like Othello, our occupation is gone. The elections are over, and many of our friends are reckoning how much ground they have lost in the sundry contests, and are going in on the kindly tack to recover ; while others think that after all their franchise was worth more than a few nobblers, and they will make a better bargain when the elections come on again. How kind our legislators have been hitherto. There is no knowing what good may result from their repeated efforts under section 7 of the Hundreds Regulations Act Amendment Act. Our provincial aristocracy are taking up large blocks of land ; don't say picking the eyes out of the country, ihat is a bad expression. Are they not all public benefactors sacrificing themselves on the altar of their country, or, (shall 1 whisper it?) sacriiicing their couutry on their altar ? One gentleman is taking up 640 acres on the Waikaia Flat along the west bank of the river, for a distance of four miles by a quarter of a mile back, whicli he evidently intends for a large skittle alley or huge brick shed, to be used ad Grraecax Kalendas. Suspicious persons think he wants to monopolise the river frontage. The intentions of good men are often maligned. There • is every probability that he will get it, as a friend, <fee. Scarlatina bids fair to occupy as prominent a position among us as it did a short time ago. Within a week we have had seven cases and one death. Since Mr Wood's arrival here from Orepuki, we have litigation in abundance. The names of them are scarcely w.>rth repeating, as many of them, like Te Kooti's battles, have to be repeated. But the great case which is exciting interest is is that of Bailey and others v. Bastings j and others. The claim in dispute is | situated at Acton's Flat, adjoining the claim Mr Bastings purchased a short time ago. I have been given to understand that it is not likely to be settled at Switzers.
