WARDEN'S COURT. (Before W. L. Simpson, Esq., Warden.)

Ah Thoong, (No. 2) was charged, on the information of Mr Blewitt, Government Chinese Interpreter, with not appearing to his summons at Waipori for mining without a miners' right. Mr Gooday appeared for the accused and stated that he was a new chum, being one of the mob of Chinamen who arrived about a month ago, and that while acknowledging that he received the summons, did not understand what it meant. Mr Blewitt said that he explained the meaning of the summons fully to the accused and told him to appaar at the Courthouse, Waipori, which he failed to do. Three other Chinamen in the same house were summoned at the same time and appeared. Hl3 Worship thought it would be advisable to have the summonses printed in Chines characters, so that such objections could not be lodged. In answer to his Worship, Constable Dunn said the amount incurred in bringing the defendant to justice was 18s 6d. His Worship said if accused took out a miners' right he would only fine him 5s and costs. Defendant at once complied with the conditions.
