AN EXPLANATION
(To the Editor.)
Sir, — In a recent issue of your paper I observe a statement made relative to Mr. Carson's child, a' the Beaumont, falling a victim to scarlet fever, and that Dr. H alley, who was in attendance, tried every means his skill sag ;ested to save the little one's life ; that it died on the second day. Allow me, Mr. Editor, to. correct t.iis statement made about the
child. Mis. Carson, with two children, was on her way from Pigroot Hotel to Tapanui to join her husband, when on reaching the iieatunont she was directed to Mrs. Rogers, intending to stop there until her husband came for her. This happened on the Saturday morning. When she came to the door in the Teviot ccach she asked Mrs. Rodgers if her children had the fever, which she heard they had. The landlady denied this, and called her four bairns to the door, and they seemed to be all alive and kicking, so she thought it better to stop there. Her two children were in perfect health until next day about two o'clock, when the child took bad and lingered for four days and a half, instead of two days, as your letter states. Dr. ll alley was not in attendance during this time, but was sent for on the mornmj the child died. He did not arrive until three or four that day ; tho child was dead before he left Tuapeka ; and how the Doctor could u^e every means his skill suggested I cannot see. I make this statement to do justice to the Doctor, and the public at large. Hoping you will insert thi.-so few lines, and by so doing you will greatly oblige —
