The English mail via San Francisco will c } osq here on Monday, 27th inst., at eight p.m. Money orders and registered letters at five p,m.

Mb, Webstek has been again returned for Wallace for the General Assembly.

Capt. B ixmviN, lecturer for the Government Assurance and Annuity Department, was, we understand, very successful during his stay here. We are informed that he received no less than 80 life-proposals, one of which was to insure the large sum of £20,000.— "Oamaru Times."

A " Daily Times " Christchurch telegram states that a woman named M'Lcod was stabbed a few days ago by her husband, it is supposed in a fit of jealousy. An inquest on her body was held on the 20th instant, when the jury returned a verdict of "Wilful murder."

The " Freeman " says the mental agony endured by the mother of the murdered child is said to have undeunined her health for the remainder of her life. Souter, who was sentenced to death, has had his sentence commuted. He is to be imprisoned for life. Men have strange fancies. It was thought no one could be got to hang Noble, and there have been a dozen applicants. The Right Reverend the Bishop of Nelson will preach in the Schoolhouse, Lawrence, on Sunday next, the 26th inst., in the morning at eleven o'clock, and in the evening at seven. A collection will be made at each service for the Chinch Building Fund. The Bishop will also preach at Waitahuna at half-past two in the afternoon.

The Bazaar, in aid of the Building Fund of the Church of England, Lawrence, will he opened on Tuesday, the 28th inst., at 3 p.m., iv the Athenamin Hall, and will be kept open for the three following -lays. We are informed that many handsome gifts have been made to the committee, and the ladies of the congregation have been using their united energies to make the bazaar a complete success. Any further contributions of work, &c-, must be sent in not later than Monday evening, the 27th instant.

On Thursday last, at noon, the Returning Officer, J. Dewe, Esq. , made an official declaration of the poll for the House of Representatives for the Tuapeka district. The number being — J. C. Brown, 3ii; W. H. Cutten, 82. The two candidates briefly addressed the few electors present. Mr. Browu moved a vote of thanks to the Returning Officpr for the very impartial manner in which he had conducted the election . Mr. Cutten seconded the motion, v/hich was uuanimoualy carried. This concluded the business.

We are informed that Mr. Purdue, mounted constable, Tapanui, has been iippointed drill instructor to the Tapanui Volunteer Rifle Company.

FKOil the New Zealand "Gazette" of the 7th inst., we are glad to observe that the Crookston Hundred, consisting of 20,000 acres, has been declared. This land is situated on runs 212, and 163, at present in the occupation of Mr. M'Kellar and Mr, Roberts.

. FliOir the New Zealand "Gazette " we learn that W. Lawience Simpson, Esq., has been appointed Returning Officer for Waitahuna and Tuapeka districts for the Provincial Council, and J. Nugent "Wood, Esq., has been appointed for Mount Bengor, and Mr. George S. Neish for the Matauia district.

On Monday evening last the Venerable H. W. Harper, Archdeacon of Westland, delivered a lecture in aid of the building fund of the Church of England, Lawrence, in the Atheuseain Hall. "W. I/. Simpson, Esq., occupied^ the chair. The attendance was good, aboa%-JJO persons present —quite an unusual muster <for a lectttre in Lawrence. The subject of the-! lecture was " Memory," and it was treated in a ,\ masterly mtuiuer, and appeared to be highly appreciated by the audience, who gave repeated expressions of approbation. At the close of the lecture, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer. The first anniversary of the Blue Spur Wesleyan Church was held in the Church on Tuesday last, which was crowded. An excellent tea was provided. Mr. Bloxhaoi occupied the chair. Addresses were delivered by the Revs. Keall, Marten, Gilbert, Menzies, Paul Kin (Chinese Missionary), and Messrs. M'Lelland and Clarke. A very enjoyable evening was spent. At the conclusion a collection was made to defray the debt on the building, which was liberally responded to.

The nomination of candidates to represent the Tuapeka District in the Provincial Council, will take place in the Courthouse, Lawrence, on Tuesday, the 4th proximo ; and the election, if any, will take place on Tuesday, the week following.

The Venerable Archdeacon Harper, preached to large audiences in the schoolhouses, Lawrence and Blue Spar, on Sunday list.

Mr. Hastedt, of Alexandra, desires us to state that he did not move the vote of confidence in Mr. Eeid as reported by us last week. He also iniortns us that he recorded his vote for Mr. Macandrew.

On Tuesday evening a meeting of miners was held at the Teviofc, to consider the be3t means of incrersing the water supply for the Mount Benger goldtield. Mr. George Irelaad occupied the chair, and certain recommendations were decided upon to be made to Mr, Haughton when he visits that district.

Two or three oases of scarletina amongst children, are reported frqm Beaumont Ferry.
